Step 1 – Determine the asking price for your used car
Do researches to see what your car is being sold for by other sellers. Don’t just use one source to find these prices. Go to other sources so the prices you are getting are not skewed by one individual source. Also add in a few hundred dollars to accommodate the negotiating process when the time comes.
Step 2 – Budget repairs
While selling it “as is” can limit the chances of buyers wanting your car, assess what needs to be repaired and fix the affordable repairs and just outline what needs to be done. Laying out all your cards on the table to the buyer will ensure to the buyer that you have maintained everything else on the car and what needs to be repaired reflects the price.
Step 3 – Preparation of the Sale of your Used Vehicle
You will need to determine how you are going to market your car. Are there special components to your used car? Is it a certain limited edition or specific modifications you have done to the car (ex. stereo system, new tires, new paint job, etc…)? Point these features will justify to the buyer the asking price.
Clean out the car; do not leave any of your belongings in your car. Spend a few bucks washing the outside and pay some attention to the features to the car. This will only help when you are doing a showing.
Step 4 – Used Vehicle History Report
It is always better to provide some sort of maintenance record for your car. This shows the Buyer that you have paid attention to maintaining the car and that you are not a lazy owner.
Step 5 – Prepare to Negotiate
You must be prepared for Buyers to bid down your asking price. It is the nature of any private or dealer sales process. Hopefully the few hundred dollars you have added into the sell price will be enough room for negotiations. If you are firm on the price, don’t hesitate to state that either on the ad or over the phone before a showing, otherwise you are opening yourself up for a large gap in the negotiation process. Not all transactions are done in the first showing, be prepared to walk away from the buyer. If you car is generating interest then there will be more buyers contacting you for your car.
